Woman Got Involved in a “Best Mother” Competition

Martha was committed to making her daughter’s life successful with numerous classes, a violin teacher, and daily chores. She believed all these efforts would lead Ellie to happiness. But, during a “Best Mother” contest with neighbors, Martha had a realization that changed her understanding of motherhood.

Martha walked alongside her lively neighbor Jen towards Lois’s house, a blend of freshly cut grass and floral fragrance filling the air from Lois’s beautifully tended garden.

As they arrived, Lois opened the door, her appearance perfectly polished, reflecting her meticulous nature.

“Welcome, ladies,” Lois greeted, her smile bearing a slight hint of superiority. She warmly invited them inside.

“Please, come in.”

Jen, always the socialite, stepped in first. “Lois, your home looks amazing, as always!” she exclaimed genuinely. “I’m eager to hear about what’s new with you.”

Martha followed, feeling a bit uneasy. Visits to Lois’s home felt more like entering a rivalry area.

For Martha, Lois wasn’t just a neighbor; she was the silent adversary, always showcasing her accomplishments.

The living room was akin to a magazine spread, every piece in perfect harmony, glowing with polished elegance.

“Let me show you something,” Lois said, pride coating her words. She pointed towards an array of plants lining her windows.

“These are from Italy. Aren’t they exquisite? They add a touch of elegance to the room.”

“Oh, they’re stunning!” Jen said, drawing nearer. “You’ve got such a talent for decorating, Lois.”

Martha nodded, forcing a smile. To her, it was just Lois’s way of showing she was ahead.

The tightness in her jaw was a silent giveaway of her attempt to remain composed.

“Look at this,” Lois continued, holding up a delicate tea set.

“It’s crafted from rare ceramics. The wait was long, but worth it, wouldn’t you agree?”

Jen applauded, “Absolutely! You definitely know how to select the finest.”

Once settled, Jen suddenly brightened with an idea. “We should have a ‘Best Mom’ contest this weekend!”

Lois raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”

“Yes!” Jen’s excitement grew. “We’ll each prepare a dish, display our homes, and have our kids perform something. It’d be fun! A bit of friendly competition doesn’t hurt.”

Though Jen saw it as lighthearted fun, Martha and Lois exchanged competitive glances. To them, it was more than a game.

“Perfect idea,” Lois replied, her tone sharp and assured.

“Count me in,” Martha agreed, refusing to fall behind.

Jen cheered, “This will be so enjoyable!” she exclaimed, missing the lingering tension between her neighbors.

Returning home, Martha stood in her kitchen, her mind swirling with strategies for the contest.

“Ellie! Come here, please!” she called, her voice firm with urgency.

Ellie appeared shortly, her hair a bit tousled from play. “What’s up, Mom?” she asked, her radiant smile lighting the room.

Martha wasted no time explaining. “This weekend is crucial — a ‘Best Mom’ contest with Lois and Jen. We must put forth our best efforts. Our family name is at stake.”

Ellie’s smile faded slightly under the weight of her mother’s words, but she quickly nodded with determination. “I’ll do my best, Mom. Don’t worry.”

Martha nodded, “Good. Let’s start.”

They embarked on their first task: baking. Martha opted for her famous apple pie, a crowd-pleaser.

She gave Ellie precise instructions from peeling apples to preparing the dough.

“Not like that,” Martha corrected as Ellie tried shaping the crust. “It must be perfect.”

Ellie adjusted nervously. “Okay, Mom.”

Despite the sharpness, Ellie did not complain, humming softly to stay upbeat.

The kitchen filled with the tempting aroma as the pie baked to perfection.

Next, they inspected the lawn and garden.

“We must not overlook a single weed,” Martha asserted, adjusting flowers meticulously. They worked tirelessly, making sure everything was immaculate.

Finally, they headed to Ellie’s room to rehearse her violin piece. Ellie set up her music, her fingers shaky as she began playing.

Midway, her nerves got the better of her, and she hit a wrong note.

“Focus, Ellie!” Martha chided, evidently frustrated. “It must be perfect!”

Ellie swallowed hard, promising, “I will, Mom. Let me try again.”

As she resumed, the room was tense with pressure. Ellie was determined to meet her mother’s standards, though feeling the heavy load.

The contest day arrived crisp and clear.

Neighbors gathered eagerly as Martha, Jen, and Lois set up for the first challenge.

Martha organized her apple pie on a lovely platter. Nearby, Jen arranged mac and cheese cheerfully, and Lois presented her lasagna with a confidence that made Martha’s heart quiver.

Nigel, a fair and seasoned judge, approached Jen’s dish first. “Mac and cheese,” he noted, taking a thoughtful bite. Jen’s boys watched curiously, and Nigel offered a warm smile. “Simple comfort. Well done.”

Jen beamed proudly. “Thanks, Nigel!”

Next, Nigel examined Martha’s apple pie. Martha waited nervously as he tasted the slice. He inclined his head approvingly. “A well-done classic. Lovely flavors!”

Martha felt a wave of relief, smiling slightly. Yet, as Nigel took a bite of Lois’s lasagna, Martha watched his evident admiration with concern.

“Lois, this is outstanding,” he admitted, awarding her the round.

Lois beamed with joy, while Martha struggled to mask her disappointment. “It’s just one round,” she whispered, striving to maintain her confidence.

Moving on, Nigel inspected house exteriors. Although Jen’s home was charming, Nigel was most impressed by Martha’s pristine lawn and vibrant garden.

“Beautiful!” he declared, giving Martha the point, leaving Lois looking unsettled.

For the final round, children’s performances began with Pam, who quickly fled overcome with nerves.

Martha smirked, feeling her victory hopes rising.

Jen’s sons followed with an energy-filled dance routine and a heartfelt song, “She’s our superhero,” winning the crowd’s delight.

As the boys finished, Martha noticed Ellie was missing.

“Go find her,” Nigel prodded, checking his watch. “We have to keep moving.”

Panicked, Martha dashed back into the house, her heart racing with dread. She found Ellie crying softly in her room, clutching her diary.

She had never seen Ellie so upset, and hearing her sobs pierced her heart.

Unsure of what to do, she knocked and opened the door gently.

Ellie spun around, hastily hiding the diary away. “It’s nothing, Mom,” she insisted, her smile wavering. “I’ll succeed. I promise you’ll be proud.”

As Ellie passed her to retrieve her violin, Martha hesitated. Something was not right, and she felt drawn to uncover it.

Guided by intuition, Martha peeked into the diary, her heart breaking with each tear-stained entry read:

“I can’t fail Mom. She’s counting on me. Yet, I’m scared. I’ve played it perfectly before, but now I’m afraid I’ll mess up. I need to make her proud. I need her love…”

Martha, holding back tears, placed the diary back and rushed out.

Finding Ellie anxiously waiting with her violin, Martha embraced her tightly.

“I’m sorry, Ellie,” she whispered. “You’re already perfect. I love you and am so proud, no matter what.”

Ellie, tears of relief in her eyes, returned the hug gratefully. “Thank you, Mom…”

Back at the competition, Nigel announced a three-way tie, with all being winners. Jen cheered, spreading her contagious joy.

Martha, moved by the day’s events, thanked Jen. “Thank you for showing me the true value of motherhood.”

The kindness renewed in Martha reminded her that every day brought anew the opportunity to love and uplift each other. A wonderful lesson from unexpected places, one can only share and treasure.
