Remember those special friendships we had back in the ’90s? We all had that one best friend – the person we’d talk to late into the night, vent about our overly strict parents, and even try to match outfits with.
When you compare best friendships from the ’90s to today, you’ll see that while much has evolved, the core remains the same.
We still have those long talks with our BFFs, share secrets and gossip, and believe it or not, we still coordinate outfits; only now we pretend it’s purely coincidental! Really, not much has changed, just that we’re older and perhaps sipping on more wine.
Best friends are like siblings we chose for ourselves. Sure, we might have actual siblings, but sometimes the bond with a best friend just feels different.
Your siblings might have stolen your toys or embarrassed you by wearing your training bra on their head – a classic tale shared by many.
But your best buddy was the one with whom you’d concoct prank calls and who’d console you when your grade-school crush was holding someone else’s hand.
We wouldn’t be who we are without our best friends – both from back in the ’90s and those we cherish today, even if times have slightly changed.
1. The Tiffs and Squabbles We Encounter

Nowadays, adults don’t really have those full-blown arguments like we used to. Instead, we might leave a sly comment on Facebook or intentionally not like their latest Instagram post.
2. Making Amends

In the ’90s, before smartphones took over, making up with your BFF typically involved passing a heartfelt note in class. It would be adorned with many sad faces and little hearts over the i’s, and often ended with a “LYLAS” – “love you like a sister,” for those who may have forgotten our favorite abbreviations.
Today, reconciliation often means treating them to a $12 Starbucks drink and snapping a cheerful selfie together to signify bygones are truly bygones.
3. Friday Night Fun

These days, going out is a rare event for many of us. Give us a Netflix series to binge-watch and a few bottles of wine, and we’re content. Friday nights have truly transformed into “FriYAY!”.
4. Playing the Wingwoman

Back in the ’90s, we relied on the once-almighty cootie catcher to determine who our ultimate crush was. Then, you’d arrange an “accidental” run-in during science class while your BFF kept rivals at bay.
These days, helping a friend in love often means spending hours on Facebook tracking down Mr. Right using nothing but a middle name.
5. Squad Goals

Today’s good news is you only need one more person to nail the “Single Ladies” dance. But let’s face it, socializing isn’t as appealing these days, so your BFF is more than enough.
