Donald Trump has requested an apology from the bishop who urged him to ‘have mercy’ on the LGBTQ+ community.
During a sermon on Tuesday, January 21, the bishop criticized Trump in front of the congregation.
While attending church as part of his inauguration celebrations, the 78-year-old Trump faced remarks from Bishop Mariann Budde.
Members of the Trump family were present, including Melania, daughter Tiffany, and daughter-in-law Lara, along with Vice President J.D. Vance.
Budde called on Trump to demonstrate compassion toward gay, lesbian, and transgender individuals. She also highlighted concerns about the safety of immigrants due to the administration’s mass deportation plans.
She urged the president to welcome people fleeing war-torn regions who seek refuge and safety.
Both Trump and Vance seemed displeased with Budde’s remarks.
In response, the president issued a detailed statement. On Truth Social, he remarked: “The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She inappropriately politicized her church.”
“Her tone was unpleasant, lacking insight or intelligence. She omitted to mention numerous illegal immigrants entering our country who have caused harm. Many were released from jails and mental institutions. A severe crime wave is ongoing in the USA.”
“Aside from her unsuitably political statements, the service lacked excitement and inspiration. She is not skilled in her role!”
“Both she and her church owe the public an apology!”
Trump concluded with a sharp five-word comment following the service: “They could do much better.” Indeed, a stinging remark.
