Songwriter Passes Away at 72: His Legacy of Joy

The talented individual who gave the world the infectious music of “SpongeBob SquarePants” has sadly passed away at the age of 72.

“We were blessed to have had Andy,” shared a spokesperson for the band in a heartfelt statement. “He truly is the reason all this SpongeBob joy permeates music around the globe.

He gave us a purpose filled with endless joy that the band will nurture in memory of his incredible gift and musical legacy.”

Andy Paley was known for collaborating with icons like Brian Wilson during his solo career, and he left a considerable impact on the music industry.

With his brother Jonathan, he formed the Paley Brothers in the 1970s, and their journey included working alongside legends such as Jerry Lee Lewis, the Ramones, Madonna, Elton John, Patti Smith, and Deborah Harry.

In 2004, Andy joined the “SpongeBob” team, thanks to show creator Stephen Hillenburg, who gathered a group of gifted musicians to concoct the show’s soundtrack.

Andy worked with “SpongeBob” voice actor Tom Kenny and the late Tom Ardolino to create memorable children’s songs like “The Best Day Ever.”

Reflecting on their creative process, Andy explained, “Kenny and I started planning to make these SpongeBob records with every member of the cast — whether it was Squidward, Pearl, or others,” he mentioned in a 2020 interview.

“We wanted it to feel like the cartoons featuring the Monkees or the Beatles. We thought, ‘Why not just create great pop songs with characters like SpongeBob, Patrick, and Plankton taking the stage?’”

Tom Kenny shared his thoughts following Andy’s passing, fondly remembering their partnership. “My friendship with Andy and our musical collaboration — where I fronted the band he brought together — is one of the greatest joys I’ve ever known,” he told Variety.

“Andy had an encyclopedic knowledge of all genres of pop music, especially rock ‘n’ roll and girl groups, and an impressive understanding of art and literature.”

Andy Paley is survived by his wife, Heather Crist Paley, and his children Jackson and Charlie. He also leaves behind his siblings, Sarah, Brewster, Debby, and Jonathan.

The team associated with the band has been approached for further comments.
