Caught in a snowstorm, Elina and her mother-in-law, Laura, find themselves on a journey fraught with tension and unresolved grievances. But as the storm grows more dangerous, an unexpected event forces them to confront their differences in a way that will change their relationship forever.

Elina walked back and forth across the living room, her steps quick and restless. She kept glancing at the clock, the minutes dragging like hours. “Where is he?” she muttered under her breath, her frustration growing with each passing second.

She stopped by the window for the umpteenth time, her eyes scanning the empty driveway, hoping to see the familiar headlights of Markโs car.
But there was nothing. She sighed deeply, her hand instinctively moving to rest on her round belly, feeling the faint kicks of the baby inside.
Elinaโs mind wandered back to when they planned this trip. She was adamant about going despite being so close to her due date.

โItโll be our last chance for a while,โ sheโd told Mark, brushing aside his cautious protests.
โWell? Is he back yet?โ Lauraโs voice rang out sharply from the other room, breaking the tense silence.
Elina clenched her jaw, trying to stay calm. โNo,โ she called back. โNot yet.โ She stared at her phone for a moment, then groaned in frustration and pressed Markโs number. He answered almost right away.

โHey,โ she said, her voice clipped. โWhere are you?โ
โI was stuck at work,โ Mark replied. โThen I got caught in traffic. Itโs bad out here. Itโll take me at least another hour and a half to get home.โ
Elina felt her pulse quicken. โSo what does that mean? Weโre leaving in the middle of the night now?โ
โIโve been thinking,โ Mark began carefully. โMaybe you and Mom could head out without me. Iโll join you there later.โ

Elinaโs eyes widened in disbelief. โAre you serious right now? Four hours in a car with your mother? Alone?โ she hissed into the phone, lowering her voice.
Mark sighed. โI know itโs not ideal. But your parents and my sister will be waiting when you get there. It wonโt be that bad.โ
Elina exhaled slowly. โI wonโt survive this.โ
โYouโll be fine,โ Mark said, trying to reassure her. โThereโs a snowstorm coming. You should leave now.โ

โFine,โ she said, her tone icy.
โThank you. I love you,โ he said softly.
โLove you too,โ Elina replied and hung up, still fuming.
Elina inhaled deeply, steadying herself before stepping into the living room. Laura sat on the couch, her eyes glued to her phone.

โMarkโs running late,โ Elina said firmly. โHe said we should leave without him.โ
Laura looked up, her face tense. โWhat happened? Is my son hurt?โ
Elina shook her head, trying to stay patient. โNo. Heโs fine. Just stuck in traffic.โ
Laura put her phone down with a loud sigh. โWell, I donโt know how Iโll manage four hours in a car with a cheater,โ she said. โBut if itโs what Mark wants, Iโll endure it.โ

Elina clenched her fists, forcing a smile. โLetโs just go.โ
Elina and Laura set off on their journey. The snow had started falling lightly, covering the edges of the road in white.
Inside the car, the silence was heavy, as if both women were too afraid to speak and break the fragile peace.
Laura sat upright in the passenger seat, her eyes fixed on the view outside.

Elina glanced at her briefly, sensing the unspoken tension that had lingered since they first met. Lauraโs disapproval had only grown after Elinaโs pregnancy.
โWhere are you going?โ Laura asked sharply as Elina turned the car.
โThe GPS says to go this way,โ Elina answered, her voice tight.
Laura shook her head. โWeโve been going to this cabin for nearly 30 years. I know this isnโt right.โ

Elina gripped the steering wheel harder. โThen tell me, where should I go?โ she snapped, her patience slipping.
Laura snatched the phone, her movements brisk, and re-routed the GPS. โThere,โ she said firmly, holding the phone out.
Elina sighed, her frustration simmering, but she turned the car around without a word.

Her doctorโs voice echoed in her mind: Stay calm, avoid stress. She placed a protective hand on her belly.
This baby had been a result of years of patience, fertility treatments, and hope. She couldnโt risk anything now.
The new route stretched before them, empty and eerie. Snow fell faster, thickening the white blanket over the narrow road.

Elina glanced at the dashboard clock. โWe havenโt seen another car for half an hour,โ she muttered, unease creeping in.
โAre you sure this is the right way?โ Elina asked, her voice tense.
Laura smirked. โIf I can tell my husband apart from another man, I think I can manage directions,โ she said, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
Elinaโs patience snapped. She pulled the car over abruptly and turned to face Laura. โDo you actually think Iโm carrying a child that isnโt Markโs?!โ she shouted, her voice shaking with anger.

Laura met her glare calmly. โIโm 99% sure. Thatโs why Iโll be asking for a DNA test once the baby is born,โ she replied.
โWhy would you even think that?!โ Elina demanded, her frustration boiling over.
Laura crossed her arms. โI didnโt like you from the start. Then, when Mark had surgery, you disappeared. You left him all alone,โ she said accusingly.
Elinaโs mouth fell open. โHe had an appendectomy! I had an important work trip!โ she fired back.

โAnd then, not long after, you announced you were pregnant. Convenient, donโt you think?โ Laura said, raising an eyebrow.
Elina shook her head, restarted the car, and muttered, โYou donโt know anything.โ
They reached a narrow road, buried under thick layers of snow, making it almost impossible to tell where the path ended and the fields began.

Elinaโs heart sank as she realized they couldnโt go any further. The radio crackled, warning of an intensifying snowstorm and advising everyone to stay off the roads.
Elina shifted the car into reverse, her hands trembling, but the tires spun uselessly.
Frustrated, she dropped her head onto the steering wheel, feeling the weight of the situation pressing down on her.

โWhatโs happening? Why arenโt we moving?โ Laura asked, her voice sharp with impatience.
Elina slammed her hands on the steering wheel. โBecause weโre stuck! All thanks to your brilliant directions!โ she shouted.
Before Laura could respond, a sudden, sharp pain shot through Elinaโs abdomen, and she let out a cry.

โWhatโs wrong? Is your bastard child trying to come out now?โ Laura snapped.
Elinaโs head whipped toward her. โDonโt you dare talk about my baby like that!โ she screamed. โYou donโt know anything about me. All you do is accuse me of cheating!โ
โWhat else am I supposed to think? Youโre always around men,โ Laura sneered.
โBecause Iโm an engineer! Thatโs my job!โ Elina yelled, clutching her stomach as another pain tore through her. Then she froze, looking down. โMy water just broke,โ she whispered.

Lauraโs face paled. โWe need to get to a hospital. What do we do?โ she asked, her voice rising in panic.
โI canโt get us out of here!โ Elina cried. She grabbed her phone and sent Mark their location, but the signal dropped immediately after.
โGet in the back seat,โ Laura said suddenly.
โWhy?โ Elina asked, eyeing her warily.

โIโm going to deliver your baby,โ Laura said, her tone steady.
Elina shook her head. โNo way!โ
โI was a nurse-midwife for 30 years. Do you have a better idea?โ Laura replied firmly.
Elina sighed, groaning as another contraction hit.
โYouโre having precipitous labor,โ Laura observed calmly.
โTell me something I donโt know!โ Elina snapped through gritted teeth.

Elina groaned as she shifted into the back seat, the pain gripping her body with every movement. She leaned back, clutching her stomach, and looked at Laura with wide, fearful eyes.
Laura quickly assessed her. โYouโll probably deliver in about thirty minutes,โ she said matter-of-factly.
Elina shook her head, tears streaming down her face. โI donโt want this! I donโt want you! I want Mark here!โ she cried, her voice trembling with both pain and anger.
Lauraโs expression hardened. โYou donโt deserve Mark. He deserves someone better than you,โ she said coldly.

Elinaโs eyes burned with rage. โAre you serious right now?!โ she shouted, wincing as another contraction hit. โDo you even want to know where I really was when Mark had his appendectomy?โ
โWith some man, Iโm sure,โ Laura replied, her voice icy.
โNo!โ Elina screamed, her voice cracking. โI was doing IVF! My eggs werenโt viable! This baby is 100% biologically Markโs and 0% mine!โ She gasped as another wave of pain surged through her.

Laura froze, the words sinking in. โIโฆ I didnโt know,โ she stammered, her voice softening for the first time.
โOf course, you didnโt know!โ Elina shot back, her eyes blazing. โYou donโt care about anything except finding ways to insult me! Mark didnโt tell you because he knew youโd destroy me with your accusations!โ
โYou shouldโve just told me,โ Laura said, her voice defensive.
โโJust told you?โโ Elina snapped, her voice dripping with sarcasm. โHow do you think that wouldโve gone? All this time, Iโve listened to you call me a cheater, say Iโm not worthy of Mark, that he couldโve done better. Do you think I donโt know that? He could have chosen someone else โ someone who could give him a child. But he didnโt. He chose me. And I am so lucky that he did!โ

Lauraโs face softened, and she lowered her head. โElina, Iโm sorry. Iโve been terrible to you. But we need to talk later โ you need to push now,โ she said, her tone firm but kind.
Elina nodded, tears streaming down her face. She bore down, gripping the seat as Laura coached her through the delivery. After what felt like a lifetime, a babyโs cry filled the car.
Laura quickly wrapped the tiny baby in her scarf and handed him to Elina. โCongratulations. Itโs a boy,โ she said softly.

Elina held her son close, tears of joy pouring down her face. โHeโs perfect,โ she whispered, her voice full of love.
Laura looked at the baby, her lips trembling. โHe looks just like Mark did when he was born,โ she said, her eyes welling with tears.
Suddenly, a noise outside caught their attention. Laura peered outside and saw a tow truck approaching, its headlights cutting through the storm. Mark sat in the passenger seat, his face filled with worry.

The truck stopped, and Mark jumped out, running to the car. โAre you okay? What happened?โ he asked, his voice shaking.
Laura smiled, her voice breaking. โYouโre a father now,โ she said, pointing to a car.

Mark swung the door open, his breath catching at the sight before him. Elina sat cradling their tiny son, her face glowing with exhaustion and joy.
Without a word, Mark leaned in, wrapping them both in his arms. He kissed Elinaโs forehead gently. โYouโre amazing,โ he whispered, voice filled with emotion.
