So, Tom and I were pinching pennies like crazy lately because he’s all about getting this fancy sports car. I’ve been putting off buying anything nice for myself, even just some new makeup or underwear.
Two days ago, I was cleaning up and moved Tom’s phone to charge it. Right then, it lit up, and I saw this photo pop up. It was from my own underwear drawer!
I peeked into his group chat and saw he sent this photo to his buddies, saying he “doesn’t remember marrying a granny.” They were all having a laugh about it. My heart just DROPPED. I felt so embarrassed and betrayed!
The next morning, I met up with Joyce, Tom’s mom, for brunch. I tried to act normal, but Joyce saw right through me. I ended up spilling everything. But instead of being as shocked as I was, she just had this mischievous glint in her eye. She leaned over and said, “Leave it to me, dear. I know exactly what to do.”
So, imagine: that evening, Tom walks in, and his jaw just DROPS as he sees his mother, standing in the living room, holding up a pair of her own floral cotton underwear and grinning. Next to her, I stood with a straight face, waiting for his reaction.
“Oh, honey, welcome home!” Joyce beamed at him. “I was just showing your wife the kind of underwear a ‘granny’ wears. Since you seem to be such an expert on the subject, I figured you’d appreciate a demonstration.”
Tom turned beet red. “Mom, what the hell?”
“No, really, Tom,” she continued, unfazed. “I just think it’s so cute how you boys giggle about such things. Like teenagers! I bet your dad would love to hear about this too.”
He shot me a desperate look, but I just raised an eyebrow, arms crossed.
“You embarrassed your wife in front of your friends,” Joyce said, her voice now serious. “You made her feel small over something she had no reason to be ashamed of. And for what? So you could play the big man in front of your friends? I thought I raised you better than that.”
Tom shuffled uncomfortably, rubbing the back of his neck. “I… I wasn’t thinking,” he mumbled. “It was just a stupid joke.”
“Oh, of course,” I said, my voice cool. “A joke. Just like this is a joke, right?” I gestured to Joyce, who was now waving the floral underwear in the air like a flag.
There was a long pause, and then, to my surprise, Joyce started laughing. “Alright, I think the point has been made,” she said, folding the underwear and setting it down. “Now, Tom, I expect you to apologize to your wife.”
Tom turned to me, shame written all over his face. “I’m really sorry, babe. I was a total jerk. I didn’t think about how it would make you feel. I don’t know why I even did it.”
I let the silence hang for a moment before sighing. “It’s not just about the joke, Tom. It’s about respect. I’ve been sacrificing a lot so we can save up, and instead of appreciating that, you made me the punchline.”
He nodded, looking genuinely guilty. “You’re right. And I do appreciate you. I was an idiot.”
Joyce clapped her hands together. “Good. Now, as punishment, I think you should be the one to take your lovely wife on a shopping spree. All on your dime. New lingerie, makeup, whatever she wants. What do you say?”
Tom groaned but nodded. “Fair enough. I deserve that.”
And let me tell you, the next day, he kept his word. We hit the stores, and he didn’t complain once as I picked out new, beautiful lingerie, some comfy pajamas, and even some expensive perfume. Every time he looked at the price tags and winced, I just smiled sweetly.
Later that night, as I twirled in front of the mirror in one of my new sets, Tom came up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist. “You look incredible,” he murmured. “I really was an idiot.”
I turned in his arms, looking up at him. “Yeah, but at least you’re a learning idiot.”
He laughed, kissing my forehead. “I’ll never make fun of your underwear again.”
And honestly? I believed him.
Lesson learned: Respect in a relationship isn’t just about the big things. It’s about the small moments, the words we choose, and the way we make our partners feel. Tom made a mistake, but he owned up to it, and in the end, our relationship became stronger for it.
