A café owner is taken aback when he discovers his son’s teacher sleeping under one of his café tables, and he is stunned to learn about the unfortunate circumstances that drove her to the streets.

On a night marked by heavy rain, David had just managed to reach his café’s entrance from the taxi. There, something caught his eye under one of the metal patio tables. He paused, bending down to see more clearly. It was a lady, curled up on the path, her back facing him.
David approached and crouched near the table. “Excuse me, do you need any help?” he softly asked.

The woman jolted at the sound of his voice and crawled out from beneath the table. David was startled to discover she was his son’s teacher.
“Mrs. Bell?” he exclaimed in shock. “What… What are you doing here?”
With a shy look, her cheeks blushed as she responded. “Oh! I appeared to have fallen asleep under the table! Quite the surprise meeting you here, isn’t it?”
“Is everything alright?” David inquired kindly. “Can I assist you with anything? It’s pouring out here! Come inside!”
A bit hesitantly, she responded, “A tea? Could I have a cup of tea, please?”
“Absolutely, come in,” David replied, and ushered her into the warmth of the café.
Tough times don’t last, but tough people do.
Inside, David prepared a warm cup of tea paired with some croissants. All the while, he couldn’t help but ponder on what had brought her to seek refuge under a table amidst the heavy rain.

“What do I owe you?” Mrs. Bell asked, taking her first soothing sip.
“Oh, no need to worry about that,” David said warmly. “It’s on the house. Welcome to my café. If you need anything, just ask.”
Her eyes glistened with tears, touched by David’s generosity, and soon began to trickle down her cheeks. Seeing her in such distress puzzled David further. Her clothing was dirty, a distinctive scent of waste clung to her, and she looked overall very troubled.
David always admired “The Mrs. Bell,” the brilliant teacher who had turned his son’s misbehavior around for the better. What could have brought such despair to her?
“Are you alright?” he asked gently. “Is the tea not to your liking?”
“No, it’s wonderful,” she responded with a shaky voice. “Really, it’s just that… I’m struggling hard. I didn’t expect this kindness. Thank you, truly.”

“Don’t mention it,” David offered. “If there is more you need, feel free to say. I have a moment before I officially open for the day. What’s wrong, Mrs. Bell? How did you end up under the table?”
Feeling his genuine concern, Mrs. Bell broke down in tears. David handed her a tissue, encouraging her to continue when she felt ready. She opened up about the unfortunate events that had unfolded over recent months.
“My husband,” she began. “We lived with his parents since we put our house on the mortgage for his business venture. I hesitated when he proposed we sell it because it was under my name, but I agreed for our future.”
“His enterprise thrived, with hefty returns. We planned to reclaim our home when tragedy struck—he died in a car accident. After the funeral, my in-laws evicted me. They never liked me much, assuming my intent was on their son’s finances.”

“With nowhere to go, I was embarrassed to return to school, afraid of what others might say seeing me like that. So, I quit, thinking I could move on to another job. That proved difficult. With depleted savings and my children taken due to my inability to support them, I sought shelter from the rain under that table. I remain homeless.”
“Life hits incredibly hard sometimes, making it feel like any effort is meaningless. I am exhausted. Without seeing any change possible… I’m sorry if I am oversharing,” she uttered, anxiety shadowing her eyes.
“Not at all,” reassured David. “I felt similarly when my marriage ended. Look, Mrs. Bell, we have to keep moving forward, especially for our children. Giving up is not the answer. Let’s get you back on your feet.”
“Why bother?” she questioned over her tea. “I don’t deserve it! I failed my life miserably!”

“You’re wrong, you haven’t failed,” David declared. “Let’s fix this. I can offer you a job! You can gradually regain control by working here. There’s a manager position available. Plus, my late parents’ house is vacant; I’m not selling it anytime soon.”
Seeing such a talented woman like Mrs. Bell give up was heartbreaking to David. Moved by her plight, he resolved to support her recovery, and it turned out to be a boon.
Her new role at the café not only gave her stability but also empowered her to pursue legal action against her in-laws for her children’s custody, successfully reuniting with them. Mrs. Bell chose not to press further charges; having regained her children was her true victory.

One day, recollecting the rainy night they encountered, David and Mrs. Bell went out for a “tea” date, sparking an unexpected bond, culminating in a lovely marriage six months later.
What do we learn from this story? It shows resilience and trust can forge pathways even in dismal times. Sharing kindness can extend lifelines when needed the most.
