Many might think that sharing an on-screen kiss with a Hollywood A-lister like Ryan Reynolds would be a memorable experience. However, for Morena Baccarin, it turned out to be quite the opposite.
Imagine spending two whole days filming such scenes only to compare them to “kissing a giant latex condom.” This unexpected description certainly grabs attention!
If you’ve watched the 2016 film Deadpool, you might recall a set of steamy scenes that portray an entire year of romantic encounters between the main characters. Morena Baccarin portrayed Vanessa Carlysle, the love interest of Reynolds’ character, Wade Wilson (also known as Deadpool). Throughout both the original movie and its 2018 sequel, Baccarin was required to frequently showcase this on-screen chemistry with Reynolds.
To be fair, Reynolds’ character often appeared masked in these scenes, which did contribute to Baccarin’s experience. She was quick to acknowledge this in interviews, highlighting Reynolds’ professionalism while working on the project.
The film features a playful montage where the couple could be seen wearing various outfits, celebrating different occasions and holidays like Valentine’s Day, International Women’s Day, and even Christmas throughout the year.
In a candid chat on Conan back in 2017, Baccarin opened up about the two-day-long shoot dedicated solely to these intimate scenes. “The film was absolutely delightful… except for those two days of steamy scenes, which were quite taxing,” she remarked, fondly recollecting the experience.
She explained, “Filming the scenes took two days because it depicted a full year of our on-screen relationship’s intimate moments, synchronized with numerous holidays. Every holiday had its own unique attire!”
During a follow-up interview with People magazine in 2018, Baccarin humorously spoke about the peculiar challenges encountered during those scenes, particularly with Reynolds fully suited as Deadpool. She humorously noted, “Imagine kissing in that full mask—it’s like smooching a big latex condom. The smell of rubber was ever-present!”
While probably not the most desirable feedback on a kiss, Baccarin made it clear that despite these unusual conditions, she valued Reynolds’ professional approach. In a discussion with Collider back in 2015, she stated with appreciation, “While there was plenty of laughter, those sorts of scenes are bound to be awkward. But we found ways to make it work.”
She added, “By the end of a filming day, the comfort level is high. At that point, it becomes routine—questions like ‘Where should I stand?’ or ‘How should we position?’ become second nature.”
