Arlene sent her seven-year-old, Justin, to visit his father, Pierce, in Orlando. Pierce eagerly awaited his son, planning all the fun they would have. However, when the flight landed, his son was nowhere to be found among the passengers, leading both parents to realize a worrying misunderstanding.
Arlene and Justin arrived at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Virginia. The young boy was set to fly alone to Orlando, Florida, where his father waited. It was the first time Justin would travel as an unaccompanied minor, but Arlene found comfort in the words of the airline attendant.
“Everything will be fine,” the attendant reassured. “Many kids travel alone all the time, and we’ll make sure he reaches his dad safely. He’ll be escorted, and it’s a nonstop flight—nothing to worry about.”
Arlene nodded, trying to suppress her emotions. Justin was growing up, yet it was challenging to let him travel on his own since he hadn’t seen his father for several years. After the divorce, Pierce moved to Orlando for work and hadn’t had much free time until now, when he invited Justin for a visit.
“How is that possible?” Arlene wailed, almost starting to cry from the worry and exasperation.
Pierce had managed to get a two-week vacation and invited Justin for the highly anticipated visit to the theme parks. Justin, being a fan of superheroes and dinosaurs, was thrilled. His mother couldn’t say no to such an exciting opportunity for her son.
Despite her worries, Arlene reassured Justin before his departure. “Now, remember to stay with the attendant and listen to the adults around. Call me as soon as you land and again once you’re with your dad, alright?” she gently instructed as she knelt before him.
“Yes, Mom!” Justin replied, with a little salute that made her smile. His humor was infectious, and he was going to have an unforgettable trip.
“Love you. Be good!” she told him, hugging him tightly before he went off with the attendant. She watched until he disappeared through the gate before settling at a nearby café, deciding to remain there until Justin’s flight took off. She was determined to wait for that reassuring call that everything had gone smoothly.

Pierce couldn’t contain his excitement at Orlando International Airport as he anticipated seeing his son. It had been too long, and he was thrilled to finally have the chance to enjoy the city’s attractions together.
Arriving early, he positioned himself close to the arrival gate, hoping Justin would see him immediately. As passengers began to trickle in, Pierce found himself getting more and more anxious, especially as he noted the other passengers getting sparsely distributed.
Time ticked by, and with each passing minute, Pierce grew more concerned. He remembered Arlene mentioning that Justin would be escorted off the flight first. So, what was holding them up?
Pierce decided he couldn’t wait any longer and approached an airline employee to inquire about the unaccompanied minor. To his utter shock, they informed him that there had been no such passenger aboard the flight.
“That’s impossible,” he protested, trying to mask his panic. “My son was on that flight. Could you please check again?”
The attendant rechecked, leaving Pierce even more bewildered when the results mirrored her previous statement. Just then, his phone rang—it was Arlene. He hoped she could shed some light on the confusion.
“Pierce, have you forgotten to call? Justin was supposed to ring me once you met up,” Arlene asked, sounding worried.
“Arlene, I don’t know how to say this, but Justin hasn’t arrived. The airline said there was no record of him. I’ve been waiting, but he’s not here,” he replied, trying to stay calm.
Her voice raised in alarm. “That’s absurd! There must be some mistake. I’m still at the airport too. I’ll check here again,” she declared, ending the call abruptly.
“Sir,” the airline employee addressed him again, “there was no Justin on that plane according to our records. Are you certain about the flight’s details?”
Pierce insisted, “Yes, that’s the only flight from Virginia now. My son was supposed to be on it. Please, help find him!”

Arlene on her end managed to reach Justin by phone after some frantic searching. Relief washed over her as she heard his voice.
“We’ve been searching for ages, Mom, but there’s no sign of Dad,” Justin explained.
“Your dad is worrying just as much. Can you give the phone to your guardian?” Arlene requested. Speaking with the attendant, both adults discovered that Pierce was nowhere to be seen at their end.
Returning to her emails, Arlene unconsciously traced something odd with the flight information she had sent Pierce. In a moment of realization, she understood the miscommunication might stem from a crucial detail.
“Pierce,” she said when they connected again by phone, “where exactly are you waiting?”
“At the Orlando International Airport, why?” Pierce responded, puzzled by a sudden thought that now clicked with her.
“Justin arrived at Orlando Sanford International Airport!” Arlene exclaimed, revealing the mistake in the airport names. Pierce’s reaction was immediate as he dashed out to correct their miscommunication.
“Arlene! You should’ve been clearer in your emails! Most flights come here!” Pierce grumbled while rushing to his car for the drive over. “I’ll be there in no time!”
While Pierce sped to the correct location, Arlene explained the mix-up to Justin and his escort. Relief flooded her being as they waited patiently for Pierce to make it to the right airport.
About an hour later, her phone lit up with a call from Justin. “Dad found me, Mom! Thanks for helping!” he shouted, exhilarated, “I’ll send you photos from Disney soon.”
Hanging up, Arlene took a deep breath, her heart finally at ease. She felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders as she walked back to her car, knowing her son was safe and sound.
