I Won’t Use My Inheritance

Money can often create tension in relationships, especially when one partner believes they deserve a specific portion of it.

Such is the case with Becky, who was adamant that the financial gift from her father should be reserved for her personal use, rather than family expenses.

However, Becky found herself in an unexpected situation that left her feeling deeply upset.

She reached out to us for advice on this matter.

Becky explains her predicament in the following letter she wrote to us:

I’ve been a devoted housewife, caring for my two stepchildren while my husband has been the breadwinner. Recently, I was bequeathed an inheritance of $40,000 from my father.

My husband was of the opinion that this money would greatly help with family expenses.

However, I wanted to make it clear to him, “My dad intended for this money to be just for me, not for household expenses!”

To my surprise, he simply nodded. Imagine my shock when the next day I discovered that my closet had been stripped of my most cherished clothing items.

A considerable number of my bags and shoes were also missing. When I went to see him in the living room, I saw my possessions packed away in boxes.

He looked at me and said, “I always thought marriage was about mutual support, yet it seems you’re not on the same page!”

Stunned by what I saw, I couldn’t believe my eyes! It’s been days now, and my husband and I have completely ceased talking to each other.

Have I done something wrong by insisting the money should be for my own use?
