First Alleged Words of South Korea Crash Survivor After Disaster That Left 179 Dead

A routine flight suddenly became a tragedy when a passenger jet at a South Korean airport erupted into flames. The nation was left in deep mourning as this catastrophic event claimed the lives of 179 individuals. This heartbreaking incident involved a Jeju Air passenger jet that was traveling from Bangkok. As it approached Muan International Airport in southwestern South Korea, the aircraft, moving at great speed, veered off the runway and tragically collided with a concrete wall, bursting into flames.

This crash, now considered the worst aviation disaster on South Korean soil in recent decades, surpassed the grim statistics of many global tragedies and is only rivaled by incidents like the Lion Air Flight 610 crash of 2018.

Of the 181 individuals on board the doomed flight, only two managed to survive, emerging from the intense wreck at the plane’s tail section. As the hours ticked by, heart-wrenching updates began to flow in, further deepening the grief of families who anxiously waited at airports for news about their loved ones.

Despite exhaustive efforts, by late Sunday only about 65 of the victims had been positively identified through fingerprints and other forensic methods. Unbearable scenes unfolded at the airport as cries of despair and grief echoed through the halls as families clung to one another, mourning their profound losses.

Despite the magnitude of the tragedy, a haunting insight into the crash was given by one of the survivors, a young flight attendant identified only as Lee. This glimpse was captured through his first bewildered words, “What happened? Why am I here?”, spoken as he awoke in a hospital bed in Mokpo before being transferred to Seoul.

Lee, suffering from a fractured left shoulder and significant head injuries, managed to recall very little about the incident, only remembering that he was wearing his seatbelt. Stationed at the rear of the plane, he had been attending to passenger needs when the Boeing 737-800 met its fiery end.

The second survivor, also a male, sustained scalp lacerations and ankle fractures. He is receiving care at Asan Medical Center in Seoul. Although both survivors are expected to recover physically, the emotional and psychological impacts of such a harrowing experience are likely to remain with them indefinitely.

Investigators have been diligently working to determine the cause of the crash. Initial findings suggest that during its final approach, the plane’s right engine might have been struck by a bird, which in turn damaged the landing gear, forcing the pilot to make a mayday call.

Blooming courageously, the pilot made desperate attempts to regain control of the aircraft and ensure safety. However, despite valiant efforts, the overwhelming speed and impact spelled tragedy for most of those on board. Meanwhile, families and communities await answers as investigators piece together the devastating chain of events to prevent such a heartbreak from happening again.

While each passing day brings a little more clarity, South Korea and the world join together in honoring the 179 souls lost on that fateful flight. Let us hold onto hope and faith, treasuring every shared moment with our loved ones, as we strive to create a safer world for generations to come.
