Am I wrong for calling the police on my neighbor after my five-year-old said something that made my whole body go cold?

Lucy Evans

I (31F) have lived next door to Dennis and Pam Kowalski for three years. Our backyards share a fence. My daughter Hazel plays out there almost every day after preschool, and their grandson Tyler (6M) comes over on weekends. The kids chase each other along the fence line, toss toys back and forth, normal stuff. Dennis (68M) is retired, always out there doing something with his garden beds. Everyone on our street thinks he’s the nicest guy alive.

My husband Brett (33M) coaches Tyler’s T-ball team. We’ve had the Kowalskis over for Fourth of July two years running. We’re not just neighbors, we’re CLOSE.

Three Saturdays ago, Hazel and I were in the kitchen making lunch. She was picking pepperoni off her plate and she said, “Mama, how come Dennis makes Tyler go in the shed when Pam’s not home?”

I asked her what she meant.

She said Tyler told her Dennis says they have a special project in there but Tyler doesn’t like it and he’s not allowed to tell anyone because it’s a surprise for Pam.

I put the plate down.

I asked Hazel if Tyler said anything else. She shrugged and said Tyler told her the shed smells bad and Dennis locks the door.

My hands were shaking. I told Brett. He got quiet for a long time and then he said I was jumping to conclusions. He said Dennis probably has power tools in there and doesn’t want the kid getting hurt. He said I was going to destroy a man’s reputation over a five-year-old’s game of telephone.

I wanted to believe him. I DID believe him for about six hours.

Then I couldn’t sleep. I kept hearing Hazel’s voice. “He’s not allowed to tell anyone.”

I called CPS on Monday morning. I gave them everything Hazel told me. Brett didn’t speak to me for two days. He said I should have talked to Dennis first, man to man, neighbor to neighbor. He said I went nuclear over nothing.

My friends and family are split. My sister said I did the right thing. My mother-in-law said I’m a “hysterical woman” who’s going to get sued for defamation. Brett’s buddy Kyle told him I probably just cost us our house if Dennis lawyers up.

Wednesday evening I was pulling weeds in the front yard and Dennis walked over. He stood at the edge of my driveway. His face was completely flat. No smile. No wave.

He said, “I know it was you.”

I stood up. My knees were shaking.

He took one step closer and said, “You have NO idea what you’ve done to my family.” Then his voice dropped and he said –
