First responders undertake perhaps one of the most challenging and selfless roles in our communities. Their unwavering commitment and bravery in times of crisis deserve our utmost appreciation and gratitude.
Recently, after tirelessly battling a fierce fire at a warehouse in North Brunswick, New Jersey for more than 12 hours, firefighters Paul Hulling and Tim Young were in desperate need of a break.
Seeking some well-deserved rest and nourishment, they decided to stop by Route 130 Diner. While savoring their meal, they conversed about the exhausting day they’d had. Their waitress, Liz Woodward, couldn’t help but overhear their conversation.
As they were preparing to leave, instead of presenting them with a regular receipt, Liz handed over a heartfelt handwritten note. It read, “Your breakfast is on me today. Thank you for all that you do, for serving us and for running into places where everyone else runs away from. No matter your role, you are courageous, brave, and strong. Thank you for being bold every day.”
This poignant act of kindness deeply touched the firefighters. Hulling was so moved by Liz’s gesture that he found himself in tears. Her simple yet powerful appreciation resonated profoundly, reaffirming the value of their hard work and sacrifice.
Though profoundly grateful for her generosity, the firefighters decided gratitude alone was insufficient. Young took to Facebook, sharing the moving note and encouraging his friends to visit Route 130 Diner. He suggested that those served by Liz should express their gratitude through generous tips, enhancing the cycle of kindness initiated by her.
Soon, the firefighters learned about Liz’s GoFundMe page, organized with the aim of helping her father, who was left paralyzed by a brain aneurysm. Liz had been tirelessly trying to gather funds for a wheelchair-accessible van, with an initial target of $17,000, so that her father could experience life beyond his hospital bed.
Her compassionate plea sparked a wave of support, further fueled by the shared story. Thanks to the generosity inspired by Liz’s kindness, and the help of Hulling and Young’s outreach, Liz’s campaign skyrocketed beyond her expectations, raising over $86,500.
“I don’t even know what to say to that,” Liz expressed, tears of joy glistening in her eyes. “That’s incredible — what a way to wake up today. I had no idea today was going to go like this.”
Reflecting on the unexpected outcomes of her small act of kindness, Liz told WPVI, “All I did was pay for their breakfast, and I didn’t think anything would come out of it except they would leave with a smile.” Little did she know, her simple gesture would create a ripple effect of empathy and support.
