UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, Fatally Shot at 50 — Video of Him Last Seen Alive Released

In a deeply shocking incident, Brian Thompson, the esteemed CEO of UnitedHealthcare, tragically lost his life at the age of 50.

The unfortunate event occurred outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, on Wednesday morning, December 4.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch shared that Thompson was on his way to an investor conference when a gunman approached him from behind, firing multiple shots.

Officers reported that Thompson was hit in the back and calf by gunfire and unfortunately passed away at Mount Sinai West Hospital.

The scene was described as a “premeditated, preplanned targeted attack,” according to further statements by the police.

Surveillance footage captured the shooter, who lingered for several moments before launching the attack on Thompson, who was dressed in a blue suit.

The video also revealed the unsettling moment when the gun appeared to jam, only for the assailant to continue firing once the problem was resolved.

Investigators discovered three live 9 mm rounds, three spent shell casings, and a cellphone at the crime scene, suggesting the use of a silencer-equipped firearm, as noted by Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.

In a desperate escape, the suspect fled on foot before switching to a rental bike, last seen heading into Central Park. Descriptions provided by witnesses describe the suspect as donning a black hoodie with matching pants and carrying a gray backpack.

The motive behind this deliberate act remains a mystery, although Thompson’s wife, Paulette, mentioned that her husband had been dealing with threats. “Basically, I don’t know, a lack of coverage? I don’t know details. I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him,” she disclosed.

The UnitedHealth Group, along with Thompson’s family, is devastated by his untimely passing. They reminisced about his generous spirit and leadership within the industry, and are requesting privacy as they grieve.

Thompson’s career with UnitedHealth Group spanned over two decades since he joined in 2004. He ascended to the role of CEO in April 2021, providing leadership to a workforce of nearly 140,000 worldwide.

His prior roles were that of Chief Financial Officer in several departments, signifying his adeptness and commendable adaptability within the company.

Before his tenure at UnitedHealth Group, Thompson accrued valuable experience at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) for almost seven years. Between 2002 and 2004, he served as the Manager of Transaction Advisory Services, tackling due diligence for deals in insurance, automotive sectors, and more, which shows the breadth of his professional expertise.

In the early stages of his career, from 1997 to 2002, Thompson was an Audit Manager at PwC, scrutinizing finances of major international corporations and engaged in significant filings and audits.

Graduating from the University of Iowa as valedictorian in 1997, he earned the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key, reflecting his outstanding academic prowess.
