A new book has unveiled Prince Philip’s alleged views on Meghan Markle, revealing a somewhat controversial nickname he supposedly gave her.
The late Duke of Edinburgh, who died in 2021, is said to have had a rather spiteful nickname for the Duchess, as detailed in a teaser from the upcoming book My Mother And I, by royal biographer Ingrid Seward.
Seward, who is the editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine and an authoritative writer on the British royals, has penned several books about the royal family that have captivated audiences over the years.
According to The Telegraph, Seward’s book claims Prince Philip nicknamed Meghan Markle the “Duchess of Windsor.” This name calls to mind Wallis Simpson, a well-known, and somewhat scandalous, American socialite who was given the same aristocratic title.
Wallis was a divorced American woman who married Edward VIII in 1937, leading to widespread controversy due to his decision to abdicate the throne for their union.
Edward VIII, who was Queen Elizabeth II’s uncle, faced tremendous resistance from the Church of England and British leadership, including then Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, because of Wallis’s divorce status. Their union led to a crisis that saw them granted the titles Duke and Duchess of Windsor after Edward’s abdication.
Seward’s book takes a deeper dive into Prince Philip’s perspective on Markle, drawing stark similarities between her and Simpson. These observations were reportedly due to them both being slim, brunette, glamorous, and American, with previous marriages.
Meghan Markle’s first marriage to film producer Trevor Engelson from 2011 to 2014 echoes Simpson’s history prior to her marriage with Edward.
As reported by The Times, the book also touches on Queen Elizabeth II’s early impressions of Meghan, suggesting she initially “approved” of her when Prince Harry introduced them in 2017.
Yet, the Queen allegedly had reservations about Meghan’s wedding gown in 2018, reportedly finding it “a bit too white” considering Meghan’s past marriage.
The move by Harry and Meghan in January 2020 to step down from their senior royal duties and move to Montecito, California, drew comparisons to Edward VIII’s abdication and his subsequent life in France with Simpson.
Royal expert Hugo Vickers made a connection between Prince Harry and Edward VIII, pointing out in 2022 similarities in their sense of loss after leaving their royal responsibilities. Vickers noted Harry seemed rather “miserable” post-departure, echoing Edward’s own struggles.
