‘Grease’ Actress Passes Away at 72

We bid farewell to Susan Buckner, a cherished actress who brought the lively character Patty Simcox to life in the beloved 1978 musical, Grease.

Susan left us at the age of 72, as lovingly confirmed by her family’s publicist, Melissa Berthier.

On May 2, Susan peacefully departed this world, surrounded by those she loved the most. While her passing was confirmed, the cause remains private.

Susan’s daughter, Samantha Mansfield, shared her profound grief, describing her mother as “magic” and feeling thankful for their deep connection.

Susan was born in the bustling city of Seattle in 1952. She first caught the public’s eye by being crowned Miss Washington in 1971, representing her state in the Miss America competition.

Embracing her natural flair for entertainment, Susan joined The Golddiggers, an enchanting group of singers and dancers featured on The Dean Martin Show.

Her talent soon led her to grace screens on popular programs such as The Mac Davis Show, Sonny and Cher, and The Brady Bunch Variety Hour.

Her most iconic role was that of the effervescent Patty Simcox in Grease. Her energetic portrayal of the spirited cheerleader brought joy to audiences, especially with her pep-filled performance for Rydell High School, chanting, “Do the splits, give a yell! Show a little spirit for Old Rydell! Way to go, red and white! Go Rydell, fight, fight, fight!”

The 1980s saw Susan expand her acting credits with appearances on shows like The Love Boat and participating in films like Police Academy 6: City Under Siege. However, Grease forever remained her standout role. Choosing to prioritize family, Susan eventually stepped back from the spotlight to nurture her two children.

In the later chapters of her life, Susan found joy directing children’s theater in Florida and sharing her passion for dance by teaching at a gym in Coral Gables. Her loving spirit lives on through her children, Samantha Mansfield and Adam Josephs, her adorable grandchildren Oliver, Riley, Abigail, and Ruby, her sister Linda, daughter-in-law Noel Josephs, son-in-law Adam Mansfield, and her dear partner Al.

Let us reminisce over her memorable moments in Grease, and pay homage to another recently passed Grease star, all captured in the heartfelt video below.

Rest peacefully, dear Susan. Do you have a favorite memory of Susan Buckner from “Grease”?
