Mark explained he was delayed at work due to severe traffic. “It’s going to be another hour and a half,” he apologized. The thought of leaving later that night frustrated Elina further. “Maybe,” Mark suggested gently, “you could leave with Mom first, and I could catch up later.”
Elina felt her heart drop. “You mean I should drive alone for hours with just Laura?”
Mark understood her hesitation but reassured her that family would welcome her upon arrival. “Fine,” Elina agreed, hearing the icy edge in her voice. “Let’s just get going.”
The ride started in silence as snowflakes gently dusted the windshield. Laura sat rigidly beside Elina, staring at the passing scenery. Though both women were aware of the tension, they chose silence over confrontation.
